Anthurium Waterburyanum
A rare hemiepiphytic species endemic to Ecuador, named for its original collector Bette Waterbury, and one of the more closely related species to A. warocqueanum in the pendant velvet anthurium group. It carries long, broadly elongated, velvety leaves with prominent white-green venation and a deep, rich green surface — a large-scale plant that can attain impressive size on a well-grown climbing specimen. Known among collectors as a somewhat slow acclimator that takes its time establishing before pushing new growth, rewarding patience with progressively larger leaves.
-
Light: Bright indirect light to dappled shade; adapts across a reasonable light range. Avoid direct sun which damages the velvety leaf surface.
-
Soil: Open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent aeration essential for the hemiepiphytic root system. Pack sphagnum around the stem as it climbs.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 60-80% is essential — thrives above ambient household humidity.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — never saturated. Allow only the top layer to approach dryness between waterings; never allow to dry out fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; consistent feeding supports the steadiest leaf development. Reduce in winter.
