The Ultimate Gesneriad Mix
This mix might not look like much, but over 80 years of collective grower experience stands behind every particle and ingredient selection. Each component has been carefully balanced to work in harmony, creating a stable, airy substrate with the ideal balance of moisture retention and oxygen exchange for most Gesneriads while remaining perfectly suited for wick watering.
📦 Booster Pack Option
The optional booster pack is a biological amendment designed to support root-zone health and help plants establish more quickly after potting.
- It is not a Fertilizer: Regular feeding should continue as normal.
- Works Alongside Your Feeding Program: The booster integrates with your existing routine to help create a more biologically active root environment.
- An Extra Advantage: While entirely optional and unnecessary for the mix to perform exceptionally well, the booster can provide plants with an excellent head start as they transition into fresh substrate.
📊 Substrate Performance Profile
- Mix Grade: Medium-Coarse
- Chunkiness: Moderately Structured
- Drainage: Moderate
- Moisture Retention: High
- Airiness: Balanced
- pH Range: Slightly Acidic (≈ 5.5–6.5)
- Weight: Moderate
- Longevity: 6–12 Months
- Optimal Container: Plastic or Semi-Porous
- Electrical Conductivity (EC): Low
- Reusability: Not Recommended
🌿 The Matchmaker: Plants That Thrive Here
- The Classics: African Violets, Gloxinia, Sinningia, Streptocarpus, Episcia, and many other moisture-loving Gesneriads.
- Understory Gems: Calathea, Maranta, Ctenanthe, Stromanthe, Spathiphyllum, Aglaonema, and Dieffenbachia.
- Active Growers: Juvenile and mature Syngonium, smaller climbing or self-heading Philodendron, and Anthurium andraeanum hybrids.
- Thirsty Tropicals: Small-to-medium Alocasia, Rex and Cane Begonias, non-succulent Peperomia, Fittonia, Pilea, terrestrial ferns, and similar humidity-loving species.
- Kitchen Tech: Indoor herbs grown under dedicated grow lights.
🌤️ The Ideal Climate Checklist
- Temperature: 68–82°F (20–28°C)
- Humidity: 50–80% Relative Humidity
- Light: Medium to Bright Indirect Light
- Airflow: Gentle, Consistent Indoor Air Circulation
🔬 The Blueprint: Ingredient Mechanics
- Tree Fern Fiber: The primary structural engine of the mix. Provides exceptional root adhesion, natural moisture regulation, and long-term structural stability without collapsing into dense organic sludge.
- Buffered Coconut Coir: Acts as the hydration backbone, creating even water distribution and fine root contact without compacting like peat-heavy mixes.
- Perlite: Maintains oxygen flow throughout the root zone and helps prevent anaerobic dead zones from forming deep within the container.
- Vermiculite: Adds controlled moisture retention and improves cation exchange capacity (CEC), helping stabilize hydration and nutrient availability in smaller pots.
- Worm Castings: Introduce gentle biological activity and mild organic nutrition without overwhelming sensitive root systems.
- Biochar: Acts as a long-term microbial habitat and nutrient buffer while helping stabilize the biological environment of the substrate over time.
The Origin: Built for the Passionate Grower
Growing up in Africa, my childhood windowsills weren’t just green, they were alive with color. My mother and grandmother adored African Violets, Gloxinia, Sinningia, Episcia, and Streptocarpus. Back then, I had complete tunnel vision for orchids, but looking back, it’s wild how overlooked Gesneriads have become in the modern plant community.
This mix began when a friend growing African Violets commercially reached out to us after becoming frustrated with the ready-to-use options available on the market. He had one absolute requirement: Zero peat.
At the time, I was working alongside a world-renowned commercial soil formulator, and that challenge led to one of the very first formulas we ever engineered.
A few months later, he contacted us again genuinely blown away by the results. His customers couldn’t believe the health, vigor, and consistency of the plants he was producing, and the only thing that had changed was the media.
To make absolutely sure we had something special, trial bags were distributed to highly respected growers within the Gesneriad community for real-world testing across multiple growing environments.
The feedback was incredible. Growers consistently reported exceptional capillary wicking, stable moisture retention, and aggressive root development without the dense, swampy collapse common in peat-heavy commercial violet mixes. Even with its moisture-holding capability, the mix maintained enough structural oxygen to keep roots healthy, active, and fast growing.
That’s when we knew we had a winner.
🛠️ Hand-Crafted Integrity
Every single bag is hand-blended entirely to order. We do not mass-produce, pre-mix, or store components in stagnant warehouses. These formulations were built alongside serious growers and refined through extensive real-world testing across multiple climates and growing conditions.
⚠️ Use & Responsibility
Plant health is influenced by lighting, airflow, watering practices, environmental stability, nutrition, and species-specific requirements. While this substrate is designed to provide an exceptional root environment, results will always depend on the conditions in which it is used.
Tezula is not responsible for outcomes caused by improper lighting, incorrect watering practices, nutritional imbalances, pest pressure, or the use of unsuitable environmental conditions for the species being grown.
Use it wisely, respect the mechanics, and the results will speak for themselves.

Delicious and Genuine
I’m a South African living in Philly for the past 20 years. This wors is absolutely delicious and tastes like home! I was just at the Kruger Park, and this tastes better than anything I had in my trip in 2025. Congrats on a super product. Definitely buying more. Lekker.

Bitter Taste
The packing is well done, the look is presentable but the taste.. it’s not anything close to home. Or Rather the two countries who make Biltong/Droëwors. It has a bitter taste and I sadly won’t be ordering again. I was hoping it’s something I would be ordering multiple times. But that’s not happening.
